We're a family like yours. Two parents, two boys, two languages, one kitchen table.
One of us grew up speaking German. The other is still learning it, one bedtime at a time. Most evenings the German came out of only one of us, and the boys noticed.
We tried the apps. They put the child alone with a screen, or they put the grown-up alone with a lesson. Nobody was learning together.
So we built the ten minutes we wished we had: after dinner, one phone passed back and forth, a few phrases that belong to tonight, and a small star at the end.
One evening, in three parts
Warm-up
The parent says a phrase from last time. The child decides: got it, or not yet. The child is the judge, and the child loves being the judge.
New phrases
A few cards for tonight's topic, spoken by a native voice, passed between you. Two taps each. The colours tell you whose turn it is before the words do.
Use it
Phone face down. One question to talk about in the other language, at the table, for as long as it lasts.
What it becomes
Every finished evening leaves a star on the family's shelf. No streaks, no guilt. A shelf that fills at whatever speed your house allows.
We are not a language school. We are two tired parents who wanted the smaller language to be something the whole family does, not something one of us nags about.
